Get into the Wind Tunnel with HSP on June 24th

Saturday June 6, 2009

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to optimize your TT position with wind tunnel testing. On June 23rd, HSP is collaborating with the Kirstin Wind Tunnel at the University of Washington to get you dialed in.

The rider and bicycle are tested in three configurations; the bicycle alone, the bicycle & rider before, and the bicycle & rider after. Each configuration is evaluated at speeds between 15 mph and 35 mph. While in the adjustment phase, the bike, rider and coach are in the tunnel with the wind set at 20 mph. Using various flow visualization techniques, real-time force feedback, and video projection, the rider’s position is adjusted to produce the optimal posture for aerodynamic efficiency and power generation.

We will have a complete staff on hand with expertise in aerodynamics, sports physiology, and competitive cycling to provide both a professional atmosphere and individualized attention. The rider will receive one-on-one personal time with our experienced coaches and staff throughout the evaluation.

Test time in tunnel is 1 hour (This does not include prep time, warm up, etc.). We will provide separate stations for preparation, warm up and pre & post test consultation

Riders will experience a comprehensive evaluation in the wind tunnel and will receive a CD containing the following:

*A calculation of bicycle and rider reference areas

*A summary of drag and power data and for each riding posititon

*Projected performance increase

*A Dartfish instructional video containing key coaching points and recommendations annotated by expert consultants

*Photos documenting the entire experience, including various riding positions

Total Cost: $595.00 per rider

FACT Canada to present at HSP on May 26th

Tuesday May 19, 2009

Juerg Feldman and Herb Chlebek of FaCT Canada will be giving a FREE presentation at the HSP training facility on May 26th from 6pm – 7 30 pm.

The presentation will feature information on of the latest exercise physiology testing techniques featuring the Fit Mate Pro, The Lactate Pro and the Physio Flow Enduro.
Juerg and Herb will also give a demonstration showing how the worlds smallest testing lab can provide information on how to decipher what’s keeping an endurance athlete form reaching his or her true aerobic potential. Is it the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, an O2 transport situation or an issue of fuel utilization that is keeping the athlete from progressing? Perhaps it’s a combination of all of the above. Using the latest in testing equipment along with some thinking outside of the box, FaCT is closing the gap between science and the coaches.

What is FaCT?

Fact is a method for testing and training in endurance sport and is the product of over 10 years of practical research in the field. The basis of the system is a Heart Rate – Lactate test to establish heart rates used to create training zones.. After a ramp test the data is shown as a lactate vs heart rate curve and establishes the heart rate for the Lactate Balance Point. The Lactate Balance Point heart rate is a dynamic value which changes with training and racing.

Todd Herriott, founder of HSP, traveled to Quesnal, BC in 1998 to meet with Juerg and Herb to learn about the FaCT testing system and the theory behind it. Todd started FaCT NYC that same year and started using the FaCT testing protocol as part of his coaching practice and personally as a competitive cyclist. HSP is the first training facility in the region to use FaCT protocols in conjunction with VO2 testing. In the coming months HSP will also be adding the Physio Flow Enduro to the list of testing and training tools offered at the facility.

Please join us for an informative evening.

New Class Calendar for the Summer!

Monday May 11, 2009

Summer is finally here and we have updated our class calendar.

REVIVAL” is the newest offering from the HSP strength and conditioning coaches and was designed to help endurance athletes recover from the rigors of hard training and racing.

We’ve added another Med Ball training session on Wednesdays and have also introduced “In Season Intervals” for those racers who are short on time and want a focused, high intensity workout to help keep their engine sharp for the weekend events. Indoor interval training is also a good alternative to the week night training races when the weather is less than ideal.

If you are looking for a way to compliment your current routine or simply want to experience something new and challenging, check out the new class calendar and sign up!

Spirotiger Rental PROgram starts now!

Tuesday March 31, 2009

What is the Spirotiger?

The Spirotiger is a personalized respiration management system that allows athletes to continuously train their respiratory muscles. Respiratory muscle training (RMT) with a Spirotiger will increase the amount of air brought into the lungs each minute, and thus the amount of oxygen that can be extracted and delivered by the heart and the vascular system to the exercising muscles. Not only will this bring about changes in the capillaries at the cell level, this training effect will allow an athlete to ride longer and stronger without becoming anaerobic in their metabolism.

Why would you do RMT?

The respiratory muscles are the only essential skeletal muscles that work day and night- an extraordinary feat of endurance! However, during cycling- especially intense cycling, the respiratory muscles can tire which WILL have a negative effect on performance. Endurance training alone is generally not enough to counteract this effect as “normal” endurance training does not train respiration sufficiently. Increasing the endurance capability of the of the respiratory muscles requires regular, targeted training.

Both the respiratory muscles and the arm and leg muscles draw their energy and oxygen from the same source: the body’s blood supply. The less the respiratory muscles demand from that blood supply (because they tire more slowly and work more efficiently), the greater the proportion available for the arms and legs.

Results of RMT with Spirotiger:

- increased endurance and performance – improved performance under stress – shorter recovery times during competition – optimized oxygen supply to the skeletal muscles – improved coordination capability of the respiratory system under stress – strengthening of diaphragm, abdomen and back muscles

With Spirotiger RMT the repiratory muscles work more efficiently and consume less oxygen, leaving more oxygen for the muscles in the arms and legs. The result is improved endurance, optimized and efficient breathing as well as generally enhanced fitness.

HSP offers a Spirotiger rental program. For 75.00 a week, you can take home one of our Spirotiger units and start your own RMT program.

A 30 minute instructional session is included with the rental fee.
