Bike Fitting
At Herriott Sports Performance, we do not subscribe to a single fit system. Instead, we use our knowledge of biomechanics and the specific needs of cyclists to find your best position. Whether fitting a road, triathlon, track or time trial bike, comfort is a priority. Even in relatively short events, you must be reasonably comfortable to achieve your best performance.
A comfortable position is different for everyone, but our fitters will use their experience to initially set you up close to your final fit. We then work with you to find the position that balances comfort, muscle recruitment, balance, and aerodynamics.
The Right Tools
We have a variety of tools that allow us to find a position that is truly optimal. We use Dartfish motion analysis software to qualitatively assess positioning and measure a variety of angles while you're pedaling. Dartfish is the most popular motion analysis software in the world, and you have probably already seen it on TV when a sportscaster draws on the video, or when images of two skiiers are laid over one another.
HSP also offers an excellent saddle program. We'll let you check out a new saddle from our large selection of popular models until you have found the one that is the most comfortable for your body.
When evaluating frame selection, we use our adjustable fit bike, which allows us to replicate the measurements and angles of any bike to find which frame best fits your body, determine size if a model is already selected, or to assist us in sizing a custom frame.
We also offer a variety of handlebar options, ranging in both width and drop style. Sometimes the difference between an alright fit and the perfect fit is as little as having a different shape handlebar, and our selection of styles allows us to try this.
The Right Fit, Guaranteed
Our fitters are experts in anatomy, biomechanics, and physiology, and have a true passion for fitting. All of our fits are 100 percent guaranteed. If after a few days of riding in your new position, something doesn't feel just right, come back in and we will make an adjustment for free until it feels right. It's as simple as that.
HSP offers three levels of evaluation and fitting:
Level 1 Fit - $125
If this is your first fit, and you are relatively injury-free, this is the fit for you. We will work with you to best determine the position that balances comfort, muscle use, balance and control. Your bike will be measured with precision lasers, and set up within a range of acceptable norms, then fine tuned based on your feedback. This fit includes a basic cleat adjustment. This fit takes about an hour.
Level 2 Fit - $250
If you are serious about your sport, and want a position that has been fine tuned to your body, this is the fit for you. This fit takes advantage of our Dartfish motion analysis software. Using this program, we are able to precisely measure your position while riding, something previously impossible. Riders change positions while riding, and it is impossible to get any type of measurements while a rider is pedaling and in full motion. Dartfish allows us to capture the image, slow down the movement, and then measure angles at an unlimited number of positions.
The Level 2 Fit includes an in depth cleat adjustment, based on measurements of your foot, resulting not only in adjusting the cleat, but also often times shimming the cleat in order to get the most even pressure on the foot. If you are experiencing hot spots in your shoes, or something just doesn't feel right, choose this fit. This fit will take about two hours.
Level 3 Fit - $350
For cyclists with significant discomfort when cycling, the best choice is the Level 3 Fit. This fit is performed by a Physical Therapist that specializes in cycling. Physical issues like leg length discrepancies, previous injuries, and abnormal feet are commonly treated with the Level 3 fit. The heart of this fit is the interview and full musculoskeletal evaluation. Using this information, the Physical Therapist will recommend a position, as well as specific exercises to improve cycling efficiency and reduce pain.
The Level 3 fit is the most in-depth fit available. If you are experiencing substantial pain while riding, or have a history of discomfort on the bike, making an appointment with a cycling specific Physical Therapist is a great step toward more comfort and higher performance. This level of fit includes a full cleat adjustment and takes about three hours.
Other Fitting Services
Pedal Stroke Analysis - $95
Pedal efficiency is essential to comfort and performance. This service may utilize all available technology for biomechanical analysis of your pedaling. Computrainer Spinscan, Powercranks, Powermeter, and Dartfish 3D motion analysis video analysis may be used to assess your efficiency and to provide feedback and neuromuscular motor programming to enhance your pedal stroke. A fluid pedal stroke results in a more economic expenditure of energy and decreased risk of injury. Using these various resources, along with the guidance of our experienced staff, the cyclist will learn to recruit muscles in the proper sequence for an efficient pedal stroke.
Prior to leaving the visit, recommendations will be made for continued training to develop this pedaling technique into an unconscious effort. In other words, pedaling correctly all the time without having to think about it. This is an important component of cycling efficiently and without injury. It takes time to train, but with proper analysis and training, your pedal stroke can be improved!
Cleat Adjustment - $45
A critical component for cycling comfort and performance, cleat adjustment is the first measure taken when we do a bike fit. All adjustments for bike fitting rely on proper cleat adjustment. If the cleats are not adjusted correctly prior to other adjustments then the fit is at adversely affected. Cleats are often a cause of injury if faulty placement occurs. We use various tools to create the proper shoe/pedal interface for each person. We use wedges from BikeFit Systems as indicated for biomechanical alignment. We have expert physical therapists to evaluate your structure to diagnose abnormalities such as leg length descrepencies, genu varus/valgus, rearfoot and forefoot varus/valgus, and supination or pronation, etc. We also use custom insoles as needed to support the arch of the foot.
A cleat adjustment includes:
- Fore/aft adjustment
- Medial/lateral adjustment
- Rotation adjustment
- Canting (varus/valgus)
- Spacing (leg length)
- Musculoskeletal foot evaluation
- Insoles as needed
- Pedal recommendations
- Shoe recommendations
