Coaching

Choose a Discipline

At HSP, we separate our coaching programs into two disciplines to effectively address the unique needs of triathletes and cyclists. To learn more about coaching packages and pricing, choose a discipline in the menu to the right.

Our philosophy and approach are the same for both disciplines, however. We understand there are many factors that can affect your performance as a cyclist or triathlete. Athletic performance is not just an accumulation of training at set parameters for an allotment of time. There are many factors that affect your performance! A calendar with how many minutes to spend in each training zone is only one factor. Our philosophy is to address your performance by looking at three specific factors:

1. Physical Training: Basic coaching addresses the physical training parameters and protocols. This includes training on the bike (as well as in the pool and in your running shoes for triathletes), in the gym, respiratory training, neurological training, and prescribed recovery time.

There is no shortage of training programs that prescribe “standard” workout frequencies, durations and intensities for athletes. We take a different approach by creating a custom workout for each of our athletes. We do not subscribe to cookbook training programs; training must be as unique as each of our lives and abilities.

2. Health: Without good health, it is impossible to reach your maximum potential. Training breaks your body down and during scheduled periods of rest the body rebuilds itself and comes back stronger. Illness and injury can have a profound negative effect on your performance, as well. We have physical therapists on staff to address musculoskeletal injuries and we work closely with the physicians at the Institute of New Medicine. This enables us to offer world-class healthcare that’s specific to endurance athletes.

3. Mental Preparation: This is perhaps the most overlooked component that affects athletic performance. You must be able to balance the stress of training, the stress of competition (and the travel to and from), and the day to day stress from work, family and relationships, in order to perform optimally. The complexity of life and sport is ever changing and finding a balance can be complicated and sometimes overwhelming. No one is immune to stress, but you can learn to manage it. Our staff is dedicated to helping you address and manage stresses that can hinder you from being your best.

Cycling and triathlon are sports dependent on details, some of which you can control and others you simply cannot. In order to change the way you perform, you need to change the way you prepare. We are ready and able to help you address all of the factors that are keeping you from achieving your optimal performance.

Lastly, all of us at HSP are strong advocates of power-based training for cycling and we have been training and racing with power meters for a decade. While we do not require our clients to use a power meter, we strongly recommend that they do. If you are not familiar with power-based training, we offer instruction on general principles as well as personal instruction on operating a powermeter and interpreting the data. We also sell and rent powermeters and have accounts with all leading manufacturers.
