For racers new to track racing, choosing the right equipment can be a real challenge. Not only do you have to choose a bike, but gear selection is also important to a good night of racing. Marymoor Velodrome has a fleet of bikes available for rental by beginners. All rental bikes come with the same gear, and this should be sufficient for any Category 5 races, and most Category 4 races. When you have your own track bike, gearing will be an important thing to consider in terms of both training and racing.
There are a few basic gears that most racers use, they are 47, 48, 49, 50 chainrings, and 14, 15, 16 cogs. As you progress and specialize into a specific discipline, you may want to get a wider selection, but you will find that these will cover you for almost anything you need. In addition to the chainrings and cogs, remember to bring the tools that are necessary to work on your bike while at the track. A chain whip and lockring tool are needed for gear changing, and a 15mm wrench is needed for tightening wheels. Allen wrenches are the final items of the list, and 4, 5, and 6mm are the most common sizes. With these tools, you will be able to change your gear, adjust your chain tension, and do simple adjustments while at the track.
With the right equipment, you’ll be able to focus on what’s important – the race!
