Old School Power

In 1988 SRM released the first portable power measuring device. SRM’s cranks are still the gold standard in power. In 1998 the Power Tap was introduced as a more affordable alternative to the SRM. Graber Products purchased Power Tap from Tune Corporation in 2000. Power Tap was off and running and today it is a common sight on any training ride. But what was there between 1988 and 1998? Did it take ten years to develop a power-based hub? No.

In 1989 Look released the Max One. The Max One measured power at the hub. This was even before cassettes! The Max One was threaded for freewheels. I weighed the Look Max One and it’s lighter than the most current Power Tap! This was the first power-based hub…9 years before the Power Tap! Balboa Instruments released the Power Pacer hub shortly after Look’s Max One. Neither one of these early hubs were a marketing success. But the Max One did make history and it is the latest addition to the HSP museum. Come in and check it out.
