Drills, Drills, Drills
Many of you may be wondering why drills are incorporated in to sports specific training programs. Those of you that have joined us for track workouts have already been put to the test. You know they must be important because Teresa and Tracy keep making you do them. Feeling like an uncoordinated teenager at your first school dance, you fumble along the track thinking “why on earth is this important”? Well, let me explain. By breaking down the running form into three smaller segments, athletes can focus on a specific phase for improvement. Nothing happens overnight though, so in order to make drills effective and help you with your running they must be repeated, and repeated, and repeated. Okay, you get the point. Your brain and your muscles work in unison. The more you repeat something the easier it becomes. Eventually the intense focus you once had doing drills will become an effortless and efficient running stride. This occurs because as your neuromuscular system continues to fire during running drill repetition, it transfers over to your stride. So, at the end of a long, hard track workout or a race, when your body is on the redline and your cross eyed and ready to drop, your muscles will remember what to do and save you energy and help you run even faster.
Cheers,
Tracy
