Your senses are heightened, you can see the tread pattern on the wheel that you’re following. You notice exactly where the wheel is slightly out of true. You are glued to that wheel and nobody is going to take it from you. The speed increases and you’re still suckin’ that wheel. There is no one around you and you are approaching the finish, so you yell, “faster, faster!” Your lead-out nails it as you crest 40mph. and you’re home free…This is the feeling of being in a lead-out train. But today I had that feeling, but I didn’t race. What gave me that euphoric feeling of speed? TH throttling the HSP scooter down Lake Washington Blvd. with me bangin’ on the roller.
After lighting up the blvd. we did a couple HOT laps around Seward Park. That was the best lead-out that I’ve ever had at Seward…nearly 50mph. into the long hill! Whoa.
Motorpacing with a scooter is great. It’s not like getting your buddy to drive your Outback down the blvd. with the hatchback open. The scooter allows for a draft, but it is a tight pocket that you have to stay in and it can be a challenge to maintain that pocket at speed around corners, etc. Race simulation.
Motorpacing makes you feel like you did when you were a kid…always trying to go faster to get that feeling of speed and forgetting how tired you are until Mom calls you in because it’s getting too dark.
